"What support can I actually get?" is one of the most common questions single parents ask. The honest answer is: more than many people realise, but it depends on your situation. Here's a plain-English map of where to look — across money, practical help and emotional support.

Financial support

The government provides several income supports for families and carers. The ones single parents most often ask about include Parenting Payment, Family Tax Benefit, Child Care Subsidy and Rent Assistance. We cover these in more detail in our overview of single parent payments in Australia. For the current eligibility and rates, Services Australia is always the source of truth.

If money is tight right now, free financial counsellors can help you make a plan and deal with debts — the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) is free and confidential.

Help with housing

If housing is unstable, supports may include Rent Assistance, social housing waitlists, and crisis accommodation services. If you're escaping family violence, specialist services can help urgently — 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) operates 24/7.

Childcare and getting back to work

The Child Care Subsidy can reduce early-learning and childcare costs, and there are programs that help parents re-enter study or work. Your local Centrelink or a community service can point you to what's available in your area.

Legal and co-parenting support

Sorting out parenting arrangements and child support can feel overwhelming. Community legal centres and Family Relationship Centres offer free or low-cost information and mediation. Our guide to consent orders without a lawyer explains the general landscape.

Emotional and mental health support

Single parenting can be lonely. Free and low-cost counselling exists — see our guide to free counselling in Australia. In a crisis, Lifeline (13 11 14) is available 24/7.

A gentle reminder

You're not "taking" anything by accessing support that exists for families — it's there for exactly this reason. Stick to official channels, be wary of anyone charging fees to access free government help, and never feel you have to figure it all out in one day.
