💬Co-parenting scripts that actually work
When every message becomes a fight — these BIFF scripts (Brief, Informative, Friendly, Firm) keep you out of the trap.
High-conflict co-parenting drains everything. The trick: stop trying to win. Start trying to end the conversation cleanly.
The BIFF method
- Brief (3–4 sentences max)
- Informative (facts, not feelings)
- Friendly (not warm, just civil)
- Firm (no openings for argument)
Script: handover changes
"Pickup will be 5pm Friday at the usual place. The kids have football boots in their bag. Thanks."
Script: when they''re late
"I''ll wait until 5:30. After that, we''ll go home and reschedule for next weekend."
Script: when they criticise you
"Noted. The kids will be ready at the agreed time on Saturday."
Script: a real concern about the kids
"I noticed Liam mentioned he didn''t eat dinner Wednesday night. Just flagging in case it''s helpful. No reply needed."
The same brief, predictable approach can support calmer child handovers. If you are formalising arrangements, read about consent orders without a lawyer, court-appointed people in your child's life, and age-appropriate ways to explain family changes.
