🌬️Nervous system regulation for tired mums
Forget bubble baths. Four polyvagal-informed practices that reset your nervous system in under 5 minutes.
When you live in survival mode, your nervous system gets stuck in fight, flight, or freeze. These flip you back into "rest and connect."
1. The physiological sigh (30 seconds)
Two short inhales through the nose, one long exhale through the mouth. Repeat 3 times. Backed by Stanford research.
2. Cold water on the face (60 seconds)
Splash cold water on your forehead and cheeks. Triggers the mammalian dive reflex — instantly drops heart rate via the vagus nerve.
3. Humming (2 minutes)
Vibration in the throat stimulates the vagus nerve.
4. Bilateral movement (5 minutes)
Walk, march on the spot, or alternate-tap your shoulders. Same principle as EMDR.
These tools can sit alongside free and low-cost counselling, the slower work of rebuilding identity after divorce, and practical solo-parent survival systems. They can also help you steady yourself before a difficult child handover.
When to use them
- Right after a hard text from your ex
- Before a meeting with the school
- In the car before pickup
- 3am when your brain won''t stop
Regulate first. Reflect later.
