🎒School mornings without yelling: a 7-step routine
The brutal truth about why mornings are hard, and the 7 things that fix 80% of it.
6 min read
Mornings are hard because you''re asking executive function from people who don''t have it yet (kids) and you who hasn''t had coffee (you).
The night before
- Bags by the door — uniforms, hats, lunchboxes packed
- Outfits laid out — including yours
- Lunches made — fridge to bag, no decisions
In the morning
- You wake 20 minutes before them — coffee, breathe
- One song = one task — get dressed (song 1), eat breakfast (song 2), shoes & teeth (song 3)
- The 10-minute warning — "10 minutes" → "5 minutes" → "shoes on now."
- Walk out, regulate in the car — if you''re late, you''re late
For more ways to reduce daily load, try these solo-parent survival systems. If mornings are affected by separation, the guides to helping kids through handovers, big feelings after family change, and quick nervous-system resets may help too.
When it goes wrong
- Don''t apologise to teachers. Just say "we had a hard morning."
- Repair on the drive home, not in the carpark
- One bad morning isn''t a pattern. Three is. Reset Sunday.
